COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR BUSINESS

This level will test the intermediate knowledge and skills of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the following subjects: Review of Level 1 topics, The Need for Computer Literacy. Computer Literacy versus Information Technology Literacy. Type of Computer Systems: Analog and Digital Computers. Computer Based Information System and the advantages of Computer Based Information Systems. Phases of Computer Based Information Systems, Computer Hardware and Software – Advanced differences between primary and secondary memory. Computing trends – connectivity, interactivity, and Digital Convergence. Computer applications – Using computers in: Educational System, Health Services, Government, Political System, Banking system. Data Representation – Number Systems: Binary (2), Octal (8), Decimal (10) and Hexadecimal (16) -Conversion from one base to another -Character representation – ASCII (American Standard Code and Information Interchange, EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code) and Unicode. Basic configuration of Computer systems with emphasis on microcomputers, input Devices, Output Devices, and Devices that do both. Storage Devices – Primary Storage Devoices (Main Memory or the RAM) -Secondary Storage Devices (Hard Disk Drives, Zipped Drives, Floppy, CDs, Pen Drives, and the magnetic tape. System Software Components: - Operating system (O/S), Language Translators (Processors), Utility Programs. CS Application Software: Productivity Tools: - Word Processing Software (e.g. Note Pad, Word Pd, MS-Word, WordPerfect), Spreadsheet Software (e.g. MS-Access, Oracle), Graphics Software (e.g. Microsoft Power Point, Coral Draw, Adobe Page Marker, Paint Photoshop). Computer Networks: - Type of computer Networks (e.g. LAN, WAN, MAN), Benefits of computer network, intranet and Extranet, Network Topology and Logical Channel (e.g. Star, Bus, Ring and Mesh), Mode of data transmission (i.e. Simplex, Half Duplex and Full Duplex). Information System Analysis and Design: -The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Phases of SDLC (i.e. Problem Identification, Feasibility studies, System Analysis, System Design, Programming and Testing (Procedural and OOP Languages), System Implementation, Post Implementation and Review. Information Management: -Roles and Functions in the work place, Management Levels and Types of Information, Types of information {Transaction Processing System (TPS), Decision Support (DSS), Executive Information System (EIS) and Expert system (ES), Office Automation System (OAS).} Ethic, Privacy and Security: -Computer for Right Living, Computer and Privacy, Intellectual Property Rights, Computer Abuse, Security (Threat to Computer and Communication Systems, Safeguarding Computers and Communication Systems.
